Sonshine

Rev. Kristie Selvidge   -

A few weeks ago, as we prepared for prayer. I received a text message from someone who was praising God for sunshine and SONSHINE! It made me smile as we prayed, as I thought about how sunshine and SONSHINE are good for us. I read a statistic that said almost half of us have a Vitamin D deficiency. I know this to be especially true in areas like Michigan where we came from. Sometimes it felt like we only saw the sun a few months of the year! I also know that no matter where we live, a little sun does the body good!

As I thought about vitamin D deficiency, I wondered, how many of us also suffer from a SONSHINE deficiency? I would venture to say that every single one of us could use some more SONSHINE in our lives. When we let the light of Christ into our lives, we become more like him!

John 8:12 says, “When Jesus spoke to the people, He said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” When we follow Christ, we have His light in us helping us to navigate our lives. 1 Peter 2:9 says, “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.” Friends, you are chosen, you are known, and you are loved by God. When we walk out of darkness and into His light, we experience life in a whole new way.

I don’t know if you’re like me, but I love to climb into my car and sit in the warmth of the sunshine in the spring. Yesterday, I opened the blind at Church to enjoy the sun that was shining in. I love to bask in warm rays of sunshine! It does my heart, and soul, and really all of me good! When we follow Christ and allow Him to shine His light on our lives, we begin to radiate His love to those around us.

Here’s my Wednesday challenge:

  1. Get outside to enjoy a few minutes of sunshine today. I know some of you are in an office all day but even just 2 or 3 minutes can brighten your mood and spirit.
  2. Take the same amount of time (or more) and listen to your favorite worship song, read a passage of scripture, or spend a few extra minutes in prayer. That time with the SON will also help to brighten your mood and spirit.
